Sky Watch Friday: Rainbow

This is my first entry to Sky Watch. I have visited this meme many times, but never participated. I am not sure if I am qualified for this post. I can not compete with professionals. The only way for you to truly appreciate this glorious rainbow was to have seen it with your eyes. I felt they were worthy to share with you.

We had some really bad weather this week. However, after all the storms, nature provided us with great beauty. My granddaughter made these pictures. She has a nicer camera than I do. Even with hers, she could not catch the spectacular sight before us.

You will have to use your vision to grasp the full sight These rainbows came together to form a big, perfect arc. Sorry, her camera was not equipped to capture the whole picture.

This shot is of the rainbow as it appears from the ground going up to form the arc.

Some of life's greatest beauty is provided by nature. Continue your clicking HERE and share your work of art with us, or see pictures of the sky from around the world.

Vintage Thingies Thursday: Occupied Japan

Can you believe it is Vintage Thingies Thursday again. For a real treat, stop by Coloradolady's blog for all the great vintage news and items.

The Japanese economy was devastated when World War II ended. While the Americans occupied Japan from 1945 to 1952, the Japanese needed to secure necessary currency. During this time, they made thousands of antique figurines for export.

Featured below are the only ones I have picked up over the years. Some came from family estates. I probably got a wild hair, and bought one or two at garage sales or elsewhere. Guess I was thinking to make a mint on them in time to come. However, those I have seen in antique shows are priced more than I would pay. I do not believe there is too big a demand. Nevertheless, I am keeping mine. Doubt the next generation will appreciate them as I do.

Thank you for stopping by. Visits are appreciated.

Good morning, and welcome to Blue Monday hosted by Smilingsally. Take time out and enjoy her blog. It is very good.

This BLUE yard ornament is one of my favorite over some others I have. It looks like a hummingbird feeder, but not so.

BLUE-Grey Gnatcatchers.

Mountain BLUE bird. By Andrea.

BLUE-Indigo Bunting. This is an Andrea Limited Edition #7. The bottom stamp was all white and could not get a good picture to show. These are from the 60s and 70s time frame.

VINTAGE THINGIES THURSDAY: Antique Telephone

Welcome to my next Vintage Thingies Thursday. For more vintage goodies go to Coloradolady's blog and check out all the fun and vintage items that are displayed there today!
Bear in mind, this is my first post trying to use my new digital camera. It has been a challenge.

This wood wall telephone was among the first made available to the public in 1900's. My late husband's aunt gave it to us. He was her favorite nephew, and I worked for the telephone company. In her later years, she felt it appropriate that we have it. It is in excellent condition, with all original parts.

In this time frame, telephone company did not have enough lines to provide each customer with an individual telephone. There might be one to three people on the same line. This was called a "Party Line". Each person had a separate ring - one, two or three rings. If your ring was three, you knew to answer it, etc. In a small neighborhood, everyone new all about your business. So when the telephone rang, regardless of the number of rings, most of the ones on the same line, would pickup and listen. No doubt, there were times, they got an ear full. They did not know what the privacy law was then.

I use it to display some of my smaller treasures. On top are artificial flowers in a vintage glass doorknob. Bottom shelf, two small, old crochet doilies.

I appreciate your stopping by, and hope you enjoyed another of my vintage shows.

MONDAY'S with LAYTON

"Blue Mondays" was to have been my feature for today. Maybe, it will be next week.

I received my first digital camera for Mothers Day. Since my understanding mode is on the blink, I have not learned the process. It takes some old dogs longer to learn new tricks. However, I will master it.

Trust you will enjoy another chapter in Monday's with Layton.

When leaving after my visit, we take a drive around the neighborhood. We are getting ready to depart. Notice his litle hands on the wheel. He sits in my lap and holds the steering wheel. He does real well guiding it straight and making the right turns. Of course, I am driving real slow. He knows what the road signs mean and informs me what I should do.

Returning and waiting for parents appraisal. He loves it!

A tender moment of accomplishment.

Vintage Thingies Thursday: Carpenter Hands

I would like to share with you the skilled , talented hands of my late father-in-law. His trade was a carpenter. He truly loved and enjoyed creating things from wood. Over the years, he built his wife a complete dinning room suit. It was a work of art. These pieces are from the 50s and 60s time frame.

His speciality, for the public, was bird houses. The two above were one of a kind. He was well-known and respected throughout the community for his unique, smaller bird houses. Some people would buy several at a time. It pleased him knowing others appreciated his work. I am not sure what happened to these bird houses when his estate was settled. Sorry, I do not have more pictures of his work.

He was a man of great wisdom and visions. Therefore, this little saying must have meant a lot to him. He designed and framed it as shown. In order to highlight the significance of the saying, he added his personal touch. He hand carved little owls to top off his frame. My niece has this item.

These two are what you might call novelty pieces. However, most of his ideas were a work of art.

Thank you for stopping by, and trust you enjoyed this subject. We could all learn from the wise old owl.

Monday's with Layton

Welcome to the second addition of Mondays with Layton. Each week around him, is a learning experience for me.

He knows so much about things in their house and their functions. He pointed out all the fire alarms. Then, he provided a detail explanation as to how they work. Also, what you are supposed to do in the event they go off.

We decided to go outside for some activity. The garage doors have sensor lights that prevents you from closing inside and getting out. Naturally, I was the one in the garage. He was outside the door. Layton advised me he knew what to do. I did not know. He took me through each step till the doors worked.

After that, we took a trip round the subdivision. He rode his bicycle and I walked. Not sure of the distance. We had to make several pit stops. The following morning was Layton's school day. When he got out of bed, he could not stand. Called his parents for help. Told them his legs were "shaky". Riding that far on his bicycle, was just too much for his little muscles. We learned our lesson. Now, we only go half-way around. Regardless, we had a good time.

Until next time, count your blessings.

Special Mothers Day

WISHING EACH AND EVERYONE A MOST HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

Mothers Day being this weekend, I would like to share some of my past special days with you.

One of the most beautiful gifts I received was a Bougainvillea plant from my son. This is a terrible picture, but all I had at the time. It does not do it justice or show it's true beauty. It was breathtaking last year.

It needed protection for the winter. It had been planted in a pot, and the roots had grown into the ground. To move it, would have killed it. Therefore, I chose to wrap it in burlap, which should work. Regretfully, it did not. It provided me with beauty and pleasure while it lasted.

Another Mothers Day, my granddaughter gave me this lovely yellow rose. It blooms each year with just one rose. It smells so good, and I love it. Do not recall its proper name. I call it my "Yellow Rose of Texas".

A few years ago, my niece gave me a miniature rose bush. After planting, it did good for a few days. Next thing I knew, it was going to glory. All the leaves fell off, the stems dry and brittle.

I was going to pull it up, but some reason put it off. Weeks later, when cleaning flower beds, low and behold, there was a green shoot coming from that little dead plant.

I still to this day, do not understand how this plant revived. It truly appeared dead. From that day forward, it has bloomed faithfully. I have named it "Resurrection Rose".

Vintage Thingies Thursday: Vintage Family Treasures

This is a three piece vanity dresser set. Two individual boxes for powder or trinkets with a tray. It belonged to my mother. During her life time, this was something to be proud of.

A vintage Prince Matchabelli perfume bottle. Someone gave me this in the 1950's. It is a lovely blue, crown shaped, enameled bottle. Very good condition. It has a glass, cross stopper. It is marked on the bottom: Prince Matchabelli, Inc. "Beloved" perfume imported from France, Net 1/2 fl.oz. Distributor - New York.

I have no idea why I kept this bottle. Glad I did in order to share it with you. However, the pictures are not as good as I would have liked. Trust they will improve after I buy a digital camera.

Be sure to visit all the other participants for Vintage Thingie Thursday at Coloradolady's Blog. There are lots of great vintage items on display there for you to enjoy. It is a fun day out of the week.

BLUE MONDAYS: Mondays with Layton

Welcome to Blue Monday hosted by Smiling Sally. This is my first Blue Monday post. I would like to introduce you to someone special. He looks so cute in his blue pants and shirt. Also, notice the blue in the painting behind him.

This is Layton, my precious great grandson. He is 4 1/2 years old, but thinks and acts like a "little man".

Mondays is the day we share (just the two of us) special time together. We have a lot of fun and laughs. Once I cooked him biscuits for breakfast. He told me they were too CRISP. A sweeter way of saying they were hard. For a snack, we had nachos with peppers (not hot). Stated he did not like peppers. I told him guess I should have asked first. His reply, "Yes, MEME, you should always ask first". There is a big gap between 4 1/2 and 79. So, how would I know.

He goes to mothers day out twice a week. He is so smart for his age. At least I think so. He can quote several bible verses, and uses sign language at the same time. That is something I certainly cannot do.

What a delightful way to start your BLOG week - visiting Mondays with Layton.

Be sure to visit Smiling Sally's blog and see all the other Blue Monday participants.
