Mutton Busting Blue Monday

Today's Blue Monday with Smiling Sally at http://smilingsally.blogspot.com is being brought to your from Haslet, Texas.
Each year this little town has a big festival and all kinds of activities for young and old. They have various vendors and food places. One of the main attractions is a Mutton Busting for the children.
These are the sheared sheep they have to ride bear back to participate in the Mutton Busting. The object is to hold on as long as you can. You cannot imagine how many were there for this event. Some of the younger ones, in my opinion, were too small. After seeing the sheep, refused to ride. It truly was a fun and hilarious time.
As most of you know by now, Layton is my great grandson. He is the one in a hat with his best friend Wyatt. They were waiting for time to register for the Mutton Busting.
This is Layton and the fellow that walked them to the chute gate.
Here he is on he back of the sheep. It just so happened this sheep did not want to run. The reason, it could not see the other sheep in the arena and refused to move.
Once they got it in a position to see the other sheep, he was ready to run.

Here they go. Layton stayed on 3.08 seconds, which wasn't bad. There were a couple of larger children that made it 6 or 7 seconds. They got a trophy. All the other participates received belt buckles.
The next thing they did was turn small calves loose in the arena. The calf had a ribbon on it. The object for the children was to try and catch the animal and get the ribbon for a prize. As you can see, there were plenty running. Layton and Wyatt were right in the middle of this, but did not get the ribbon.

The county fair where I used to live used to have an Animal Scramble. If the child caught the animal, they could keep it.

It has since been stopped, because many of the animals were so traumatized, they didn't survive the trip home.

I imagine a calf would be okay to be chased around and might even enjoy it. Very cute!

Now, this looks like what I call fun. I must confess that though I live in Houston, I don't know where Haslet is.

We grew up in a Rodeo town, but I never saw this event. Looks like the kids were having fun. I'm not sure about the sheep ;>)

What an adorable post. It so brings back memories of my little boy...He loved the rodeo..in fact, went on to ride bulls in high school, won a scholarship to college and rode all 4 yrs. I am not sure I ever really saw him ride because when he came out on the bull, my eyes closed tight. :))
Not really but it was very scary.
Your little ggrandson is precious.

One of our very favorite meals that we both grew up on is red beans, onion, a big slice of fresh onion and ice tea. Oh boy...good eating.
