Pink Saturday Special

When I moved to Fort Worth in 1964 I worked for the telephone company. I met a lady that became one of my dearest friends. We worked together for several years in the same office. Her name was Polly. She was one of a kind. Most pleasant and fun to be with. She was a fine christian lady that loved a little country church that she attended regularly.

In 2008, she went for her annual physical feeling great. Had no symptoms of being sick or anything. Some of the test made showed she possibly had a serious problem. Upon further testing and analyzing, they determined she had cancer in her lungs.(She never smoked) It was at the stage and so near her heart, surgery was out of the question. It had even spread to her kidneys. She had the means to go and get the best of help or treatment available. She went through so much during this time, but never lost her faith. Just proves that money cannot by health or happiness. The doctors told her she would not live a year. Through her faith and strength that she had left, she never gave up. She got out, went places and did things she had never done before as though nothing was wrong. A little over a year later, time took its toll on her, and she had to go to the hospital. I went to visit her on that day. We had a good visit and laughed about some of the things we had done over the years. She said she actually felt fine, except for being weak. The very next morning, I called to see how she was doing before I made another visit. Her son answered the phone and said they were moving her to the hospice place. That was not what I was expecting. She asked to talk to me, and as long as I live I will never forget that conversation. Even today, it is very hard for me to share this. She knew she was near the end. but still strong in her faith. This was our goodby conversation. I was touched and blessed by her strong, brave and great attitude toward all this. She said she was ready to go. I was an emotional wreck. I visited the hospice place the following morning, but she never knew anyone after they took her there. That was the most heartbreaking thing I have experienced in a long time. She went to her heavenly home Wednesday, December 23, 2009.

Would like to share a little more of what a great human being and inspiration she was to so many. It is hard to understand why when someone so good is stricken with this dreadful killer. The little country church I mentioned, she did so much for it. In fact, she paid to have the doors into the church made larger, so that when she passed away they could get through the door better. She bought a new organ as well. There were other things she wanted to do for this church, but never had the chance. The following concludes my message on another cancer case where her work is still being carried on.This a copy of an article that appeared in a local newspaper where Polly lived. She would have been so proud. It was one of final wishes that the steeple be purchased and donated to the 118-year-old Cahill Methodist Church after her death. On March 17, 2011, her dream came true. "This is an emotional day for us, the Pastor said, gazing up at the steeple from the church yard with tears in his eyes". No doubt Polly was watching the whole thing from above.
