Vintage Facts

It is a known fact, when you visit Coloradolady at http://coloradolady.blogspot.com you will be very pleased. There are so many great vintage wares featured each week. My vintage post is not what I normally share. If it does not suit your fancy, there are lots of other great vintage post to view. Check them out.

DID YOU KNOW

First Gloves: Until 1870, American baseball players did not wear gloves when they played ball. That year, Cincinnati Red Stockings catcher, Doug Allison, decided his hands were too sore, so he fashioned half-fingered, buckskin mittens to wear - the first baseball glove used in a game.

We've Come a Long Way: The first electronic computer. which was introduced to the world over 50 years ago, was named ENIAC. It was 80 feet long. A personal computer in today's world can store a million times more information than this early model.

Paint Job: The Eiffel Tower, the famous landmark in Paris, is 1,063 feet high and consists of an iron framework supported on four masonry piers. Every seven years, the structure is repainted with dark brown paint - 50 tons of it.

The first roller coaster in the United States is built.

In July, transcontinental air service begins with regularly scheduled trips between New York and Los Angeles. A $350 ticket will get you there in 48 hours.

The game of "beano" is first introduced in the U.S. at an Atlanta carnival. When a toy salesman takes the game to New York, its name changed to the familiar "Bingo".

On the evening of December 31st, Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians play "Auld Long Syne" as a New Year's song for the first time.

The White House gets its first telephone.

Thanks for sharing these vintage facts with us. I didn't know that Bingo first had a different name. It's interesting that in 1932 Congressmen still made much more than the people they represented.
The picture of your mother is adorable.

Wow!!! How interesting that gloves weren't used for baseball in the beginning and a doctor made just a little bit more income than a college teacher. Thank you LV. That took a lot of research!!

Love history trivia. Your mother sure saw a lot of changes and so many new inventions, but so have you. I have seen my share and I wonder what my kids and my grandkids will see in their lifetimes. It's just amazing to think of all the little things we have and use every day had to start somewhere.
LV, I sure hope you get some rain soon. Too bad Lee couldn't have scooted just a little closer and let it go over the fires.
Just as the farmers are gearing up to pick here, the rains seem to be moving in. Got a 60% chance tomorrow and then another chance on Sunday and with the low yields they are expecting, they sure can't afford to dry it.
Hang in there- rain will come- Craig and I will do a rain dance for you tomorrow.
Hugs- Tete

I love that picture of your mother! Oh, the stories she would have been able to tell. History is such an important part of life....much can be learned from reading pieces of history. You know, it's funny how times have changed but nothing has really changed. Thanks form stopping by aprons and old lace.
