Vintage Thingies Thursday: Kipling Book

Welcome to another Vintage Thingies Thursday with Coloradolady. Be sure to take the time to pay her visit. There is always some very interesting items on this post.

I have no recollection of where or why I have this book. No one in my family would have owned it. Perhaps, one day at a garage sale, I saw it and thought it might be a rare book. It may not be rare, but it is certainly vintage. If any of you book authorities can enlighten me on this, I would appreciate it.

It does appear to be very old. It is a long way from being in perfect condition. However, considering its age, it has survived petty well.

Below are just three pages from this book. They are not as clear as I would have liked, but I am still learning with new camera. Trust you can read some of them. The entire book is filled with his poems.

This is a very interesting book to me for several reasons. There has to be an explanation as to why I have it. I probably had a senior moment. Trust anyone visiting my post today will find something that suits your taste.

Until we meet again, take care and enjoy each day.

This is a very interesting book. I was a bit taken aback to see a swastika on the cover and first page, so I looked it up and I have emailed you some info on this.
Do you think that this might have been in your family before the war? I think you have a rare book here. You should have it checked out by a book expert.

It definitely is very old, and the swastikas make me think it is pre-WWII. Before then the swastika was a neutral, ancient symbol, and then of course as we know, it came to represent hate. Since much of Kipling's work was done pre-WWI, this could easily be from the 1920s or earlier.

It really is wild how powerful such a little symbol is! When I looked at the title page I was so shocked by the swastikas! What a piece of history you have here!

I, too, would have been attracted to this book. I love old poems. They're so romantic and feminine. I hope someone can tell you more about this. Go to "I Antique Online.com" and post a picture of it in one of the groups that has to do with old books. There's lots of knowledgeable people there who can help. While you visit that site, take a look at My Group called, "Decorating with Antiques and Collectibles. It's a wonderful place to get ideas. Please visit and browse for a while; if you like what you see, click the "Follow" button so that we can inspire one another often!

I just love Kipling this is a great old book. Many of Rudyard Kipling's older books have a swastika printed on their covers, which has led to many claiming that he is racist. The truth is that the swastika is an Indian sign of good luck, often used by Hindu traders on their account books; when the Nazis started to gain recognition he commanded the engraver to remove it from the printing block. (Note that the arms of the Nazi swastika bend to the right, not to the left as in Kipling's which is more typical of the swastika used by Buddhists.)
Kipling was Born in India.
