Vintage Thingies Wash Day

Coloradolady and her Vintage Thingies Thursday friends invites you to join them for a great show today. They are waiting for you at http://coloradolady.blogspot.com.
This is the way some people washed their cloths. We used the old black cast iron pots.
Only way we had to dry our cloths. It was rather nice, as the sun and air makes them smell so good. Some people still have a cloths line, but most use a dryer.

And, then we ironed them in this fashion. I still have the iron, but certainly do not use it.

Oh, lawdy mercy! I so remember the old wash tubs & wringer washer g'ma Maggie had ... nothing better than clothes fresh off the line. I use my clothesline year round.

Great memories.
Have a beautiful day

I hardly get the laundry done now! I read about how my grandmother washed, hung the clothes in the dining room on Monday then ironed all day Tuesday..yuck!

Yes in days gone by washing was such a big task and took all day to do now we throw the clothes in the machine set it and leave it and as you said many will then move it from one machine to another to dry it me I prefer to hang my clothes on a line out in the sunshine to dry....

Where did you find these things, at some kind of old fashioned display?

I have hung many a piece of clothing on an outside line. I loved how they smelled when I took them in at the end of the day.

Hi LV, I love the smell of clothes which have been hung outside to dry... We cannot do that in our community (against the rules)... Darn it!!!!

But my Mom had an old wringer washer --which was about one step up from the wash tubs....

Times were different back then, weren't they?

Hugs,
Betsy

Lv, after seeing the way people had to wash clothes, I am so thankful I live in a time where I can just put in a washing machine! I do love to hang clothes on my clothes line, always have. Today, I hung my towels out and they tried within two hours.
Great post!

Hi Meme! I love your post on Vintage Laundry day! I am so happy that I have a washing machine to do this chore for me! No wonder women stayed in such good shape back then! A lot of hard work. I still like to hang out my clothes on weather permitting days. And especially for bedding, and towels. Ironing is not my favorite chore. I ironed daily as I was a teenager in my parents home. Now only when I do my husband work shirts and a few other have to's! Mostly I try to let the dryer do it's wrinkle magic!
Blessings to you!
Susie

THis makes me so glad to have a washer. There is something about line dried clothes though ...

Hanging clothes out on a line is really frowned upon here in the city. Years ago I would hang out my sheets-love the way they smelled. My Mom had a wringer washer in the 1960's when I was at home. Glad we have the automatic ones now.

Wow...there was a long process to cleaning clothes once upon a time.
I miss the crispness and fresh smell of drying clothes on the clothes line. I remember dashing outside to take the clothes down off the line before a storm came. Thanks for the memories!

Hello LV, you gave me a scare when you didn't post. Smile! I am so happy to see you today.

I remember the old wash tubs but never used them. I finally got a dryer when I had my 5th baby. When we lived on the dairy farm, we had baths in a metal washtub. We had an inside bathroom without a tub or shower. Fun times on that farm.

Glad you are back.
Love, Jeanne

I remember the wash tubs you show...we didn't use a black pot, tho. :)
We had the wonderful clothes lines and I don't have one now. Mr. Sweet said he would make me one but, my back yard is rather small and I really don't want the line up. I do like my dryer...:)
I am getting sooo SOFT in my olden age.

I love this LV! I have twin tubs I plant in my garden. I use a vintage wooden ironing board in my sewing room but I certainly do not use any of my 4 antique irons. The pics are all so fun!

Thanks for showing off these neat things, LV! My mom has the old-fashioned iron too, but she uses it as a door stop on her bedroom door! Ha! :) The kids and I have been going through the Little House on the Prairie books together and just read the part about ma using the sad iron to iron and then hanging them all out on bushes and the clothes line to dry! :)

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I never use a dryer, but because I live in Australia, have no need for one. Love the smell of fresh laundry straight from the fresh air. I have one of those irons too and use it for a door stop.:)
Those ironing boards made of wood are so nice to look at too.
My first washing machine had an electric wringer and was great.Thank you for your nice visit and comments.

I remember the wringer washer and the washboard. We had a clothes line but our iron was electric.

I lived in LA for a short time when I was young. I tried to dry my clothes on the clothes line outside, but they didn't smell good when we brought them in. Too much smog! They smelled bad and they looked a little gray! and that was that--no more drying outside!

I experienced using that kind of iron, it's heavy lol.

Hi LV! I love the wash basins. The iron is a testament to why people did used to go to work out at gyms - life was a workout!

(I haven't been around in a while because of being busy with the shops but I really need to get back to VTT.)

So many sweet memories here. I like clothes fresh off the line! Sigh!

That iron is very cool. I am not much of an iron lady on laundry day!
